Santa Cruz de La Palma
The town is very well preserved and was built in the 16 - 19 century. Also nowadays it is the cultural center of the island. Beautiful old mansions, lovely "plazas", a vivid harbour and promenade, many restaurants, cafés and bistros which alternate with calm streets and corners. The town was the third biggest port after Sevilla y Antwerp in 17 th century and is now being decreed World Culture Heritage. It is site of the island government and of many other institutions as i.e. Astrophysics (the largest northern european planatorium). Two theatres, museums, port and yacht port, cinema, old market hall, beaches and bus station you can walk to. Airport, hospital and the tourist center "Los Cancajos" are within a radius of 5 km. Churches and monastries with flemic and spanish art can be seen. The moutain woods invite you go trekking. A calm tourist atmosphere in the middle of a normal town life is possible here.
